Spiritual Warfare: Equipping Yourself with the Armor of God

The Strategy – Oiling Yourself Against the Enemy’s Grip

How to Spiritually Prepare for Battle

✨“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.” – Ephesians 6:11 (BSB)

Why Preparation is Key

No soldier enters battle without proper training, armor, and a strategy. The same applies to spiritual warfare. If we are unprepared, the enemy will find ways to trip us up, but if we are equipped, we can stand firm.

Paul gives us a critical instruction in Ephesians 4:27:

✨“Do not give place to the devil.”

In other words, don’t give him a foothold! Yesterday, we talked about how ancient wrestlers coated themselves in oil to make it difficult for their opponent to grip them. Spiritually, we must do the same. If we are "anointed" with God's truth and power, the enemy will struggle to gain a hold on us.

The Armor of God: A Defensive and Offensive Strategy

Paul outlines our battle strategy in Ephesians 6:13-17:

✨“Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” – Ephesians 6:13-17 (BSB)

Let’s break it down piece by piece:

1. The Belt of Truth

A Roman soldier’s belt secured the rest of his armor. Without truth, everything else falls apart. Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44), so our first defense is standing on God’s truth.

Application: Stay rooted in Scripture. Let God’s Word define reality, not emotions or worldly influences.

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness

This piece of armor protects the heart—the place where Satan often attacks with guilt, condemnation, and shame. The enemy wants us to feel unworthy, but our righteousness comes from Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Application: Walk in righteousness. Repent quickly when you sin and refuse to let guilt become a stronghold.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

A soldier’s shoes were crucial—they provided stability and mobility in battle. Likewise, when we stand firm in the Gospel, we won’t be easily shaken.

Application: Walk in peace and readiness to share the Gospel. When spiritual attacks come, don’t panic—stand firm in your faith.

4. The Shield of Faith

In ancient battles, soldiers used large shields to block fiery arrows from the enemy. The enemy will fire attacks of fear, doubt, and temptation, but faith blocks them.

Application: Strengthen your faith through prayer, studying God’s Word, and remembering His faithfulness in your life.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

The helmet protects the head—symbolizing our thoughts and mind. Satan’s greatest attacks often come in the form of lies, doubt, and confusion.

Application: Guard your mind by meditating on God’s promises and rejecting thoughts that don’t align with His truth (2 Corinthians 10:5).

6. The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word)

The only offensive weapon in the armor is the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted, He fought back using Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11).

Application: Memorize and declare Scripture out loud when facing spiritual battles. The enemy cannot stand against God’s truth.

Anointing Yourself: Staying Spiritually Slippery

To ensure the enemy can’t grip us, we must “anoint” ourselves in a daily spiritual routine.

1. Prayer – Stay connected to God (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

2. Bible Study – Fill your mind with truth (Psalm 119:105).

3. Worship – Keep your spirit aligned with God (Psalm 95:1-2).

4. Repentance – Remove any footholds (1 John 1:9).

5. Community – Surround yourself with strong believers (Hebrews 10:25).

✨“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” – 1 John 2:20 (BSB)

Action Step for Today

Take a moment to evaluate:

1. Which piece of the armor do you struggle with most?

2. Are there areas where the enemy has gained a foothold?

3. What steps will you take to “oil yourself” against the enemy’s grip?

Pray and ask God to fully equip you with His armor today.

Coming Up: Day 4 – Practical Application: Becoming "Slippery" in the Spirit

Tomorrow, we’ll focus on practical ways to apply this armor in daily life and how to walk victoriously against the enemy’s schemes!
