The Wrestling Metaphor – Up Close and Personal
Why Spiritual Warfare is a Close-Combat Battle
✨“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:12 (BSB)
Why Did Paul Use Wrestling as a Metaphor?
Paul could have described spiritual warfare in many ways—he could have likened it to archery, sword fighting, or even large-scale battles. But he specifically used the term “wrestle.” Wrestling is an intense, hand-to-hand struggle that requires endurance, strength, and strategy.
In the ancient world, wrestling wasn’t just a sport—it was often a fight to the death. The Greco-Roman style of wrestling Paul was familiar with was grueling and demanded complete physical and mental engagement. There was no distancing yourself from the opponent. You couldn’t sit back and watch from afar; it was a close-quarters battle where one opponent sought to dominate the other.
This is exactly the type of battle we are in spiritually.
✨“Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8 (BSB)
Satan isn’t launching distant attacks with flaming arrows—he’s up close, pressing in, trying to gain leverage in our lives. Our battle is direct, personal, and requires constant vigilance.
Wrestling Requires Strategy
A wrestler doesn’t just rush into a match blindly—he studies his opponent, learns his weaknesses, and develops a strategy. This is crucial in spiritual warfare as well.
✨“So that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.” – 2 Corinthians 2:11 (BSB)
The enemy has specific strategies against each of us, exploiting our past wounds, weaknesses, and emotional triggers. If we don’t recognize his tactics, we will struggle to stand against him effectively.
Common Wrestling Tactics of the Enemy:
1. Distraction – Keeping us too busy or preoccupied to focus on God.
2. Division – Turning believers against one another through offense and strife.
3. Doubt – Whispering lies that make us question God’s goodness.
4. Discouragement – Using difficulties to wear us down.
5. Deception – Twisting Scripture and truth to lead us astray.
Knowing these tactics helps us prepare. A wrestler doesn’t just react—he anticipates his opponent’s next move and counters it. Likewise, we must be proactive in our spiritual defenses rather than waiting until we’re in crisis.
Eliminating “Handholds” – Don’t Give the Enemy a Grip!
Ancient wrestlers would coat themselves in oil before a match, making it difficult for their opponents to grab hold of them. This is a powerful spiritual picture.
✨“Do not give place to the devil.” – Ephesians 4:27 (BSB)
Satan is constantly looking for “handholds” in our lives—areas of unrepented sin, bitterness, fear, or unresolved anger that he can grip and use against us. When we allow these things to remain, we give him an advantage in the fight.
Common Handholds the Enemy Uses:
Unforgiveness – Holding onto offense gives Satan leverage (2 Corinthians 2:10-11).
Fear and Anxiety – Doubting God’s provision weakens our faith (Philippians 4:6-7).
Unconfessed Sin – Hidden sins create a foothold for attack (Psalm 32:3-5).
Pride – Thinking we can fight in our own strength rather than relying on God (Proverbs 16:18).
When we repent, forgive, and align ourselves with God’s Word, we become “slippery” in the Spirit—the enemy may try to grab us, but we give him no grip.
How to Wrestle Spiritually and Stand Firm
Unlike earthly wrestling, where strength determines victory, our spiritual battles are won through surrender to God and reliance on His power.
1. Submit to God’s Authority
Before resisting the devil, we must first be fully submitted to God’s will.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7 (BSB)
2. Stay Spiritually Vigilant
A good wrestler is always aware of his opponent’s movements. We must remain watchful in prayer.
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” – Matthew 26:41 (BSB)
3. Use the Word of God as Your Weapon
Jesus fought Satan’s temptations with Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11). We must do the same.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” – Hebrews 4:12 (BSB)
4. Refuse to Engage in Fleshly Battles
If Satan can get us to fight in the flesh—anger, fear, pride—he’s already winning. We must fight spiritually, not emotionally.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh.” – 2 Corinthians 10:3 (BSB)
5. Walk in the Spirit
When we live under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to resist Satan’s attacks.
✨“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16 (BSB)
Action Step for Today
Take a moment to ask God:
1. Are there any areas in my life where I’ve given the enemy a grip?
2. Are there sins, fears, or strongholds I need to surrender to God?
3. How can I better equip myself to recognize and resist Satan’s tactics?
Pray for wisdom and strength to fight effectively, and make a commitment to address any open doors that may be giving the enemy access.
Coming Up: Day 3 – The Strategy: Oiling Yourself Against the Enemy’s Grip
Tomorrow, we’ll explore the Armor of God and how to spiritually prepare for battle. Just as ancient wrestlers used oil to stay slippery, we’ll look at how to “anoint” ourselves with God’s truth so that the enemy has no foothold in our lives.
